न जाने किस की हमें उम्र भर तलाश रही।

जिसे क़रीब से देखा वो दूसरा निकला।

Life long, I searched for, was an unknown dear

He was someone else, whom I saw from near. 

ये इक शजर है जिस पे न काँटा न फूल है। 

साए में इस के बैठ के रोना फ़ुज़ूल है। 

..... शहरयार..... 

A tree which neither a flower nor thorn bears. 

Sitting in it's shade, it is futile  to shed tears. 

जो लिखा है कि जो पढ़ा है जो किया है। 

सब भुला देगी ये दुनिया इश्क़ कीजे। 

..... नौमान शौक़..... 

कूचा-ए-यार से यारब न उठाना हम को। 

इस बुरे हाल में भी हम तो यहीं अच्छे हैं। 

..... मुज़्तर ख़ैराबादी..... 

उन का ज़िक्र उन की तमन्ना उन की याद।

वक़्त कितना क़ीमती है आजकल ।

..... शकील बदायूनी..... 

इक पल किसी दरख़्त के साए में साँस ले। 

सारे शहर में जानने वाला कोई तो हो। 

..... किश्वर नाहीद..... 

For a moment, breathe under shade of a tree.

Someone in the city, should also recognise thee. 

बहार आए तो मेरा सलाम कह देना। 

मुझे तो आज तलब कर लिया है सहरा ने।..... कैफ़ी आज़मी.....

If spring arrives, convey my salute, after all.  

Today, the desert for me, has served a call.

अब जिस तरफ़ से चाहे गुज़र जाए कारवाँ। 

वीरानियाँ तो सब मेरे दिल में उतर गईं।

..... कैफ़ी आज़मी.....

The caravan may pass from  any side now.

Deserts have settled in my heart anyhow.

उसे ख़बर थी हम विसाल - ओ-हिज्र इक साथ चाहते हैं।

सो उस ने आधा उजाड़ रक्खा है, आधा बना दिया है।..... फ़रहत अहसास..... 

She knew that I wanted to meet and depart in one go.

 So she has deserted one half and let the other grow. 

रौशन जमाल-ए-यार से है अंजुमन तमाम। 

दहका हुआ है आतिश-ए-गुल से चमन 

तमाम।..... हसरत मोहानी..... 

Lover 's beauty has illuminated gathering as a whole. 

Entire garden is on fire with the glow of flower' s role. 

अच्छा ख़ासा बैठे बैठे गुम हो जाता हूँ। 

अब मैं अक्सर मैं नहीं होता तुम हो जाता हूँ।..... अनवर श'ऊर..... 

While sitting, I lose my own entity somehow. 

I don't remain myself but become you now. 

दोस्ती आम है लेकिन ऐ दोस्त। 

दोस्त मिलता है बड़ी मुश्किल से !

Friendship is common O friend.

But rarely, you can find a

 friend ! 

ऐ ग़म-ए-जिंदगी न हो नाराज़। 

मुझ को आदत है मुस्कुराने की।

Life griefs ! Don't get angry in a while. 

I am simply habituated  to smile.
