बे-ख़ुदी बे-सबब नहीं 'ग़ालिब' 

कुछ तो है जिस की पर्दा-दारी है 

Ecstasy is not without a cause. 

Something is veiled for a cause. 

बे-ख़ुदी ले गई कहाँ हम को 

देर से इंतिज़ार है अपना 

..... मीर तक़ी मीर..... 

Where has ecstasy brought me along? 

I am  searching my own, since long. 

होश वालों को ख़बर क्या बे-ख़ुदी क्या चीज़ है 

इश्क़ कीजे फिर समझिए ज़िंदगी क्या चीज़ है..... निदा फ़ाज़ली..... 

To those in senses, ecstasy isn't known. 

Love to understand, how life is known. 

आबरू शर्त है इंसाँ के लिए दुनिया में 

न रही आब जो बाक़ी तो है गौहर पत्थर 

..... अमीर मीनाई..... 

Dignity is essential for a man to mean

A pearl is a stone without it's sheen. 

चमन में रखते हैं काँटे भी इक मक़ाम ऐ दोस्त 

फ़क़त गुलों से ही गुलशन की आबरू तो नहीं..... उम्मीद फ़ाज़ली.....

For thorns, there's a place, in the garden space. 

Only flowers just can not dignify this place. 

एक आँसू ने डुबोया मुझ को उन की बज़्म में 

बूँद भर पानी से सारी आबरू पानी हुई 

..... ज़ौक़..... 

I was drowned by a tear drop in her esteemed contact. 

One water drop watered down my entire respect. 

किसी को कैसे बताएँ ज़रूरतें अपनी 

मदद मिले न मिले आबरू तो जाती है 

..... अज्ञात..... 

How can I tell some one, my need? 

 Help or not, dignity 's lost indeed. 

निकल गए हैं जो बादल बरसने वाले थे 

ये शहर आब को तरसेगा चश्म-ए-तर के बग़ैर..... सलीम अहमद..... 

Clouds that could rain, have passed by. 

City' ll long for water without wet eye ! 

हया से हुस्न की क़ीमत दो-चंद होती है 

न हों जो आब तो मोती की आबरू क्या है अज्ञात 

Shyness doubles the value of beauty being seen. 

What's dignity of pearl without it's sheen?

गुनाह कर के भी हम रिंद पाक-साफ़ रहे 

शराब पी तो नदामत ने आब आब किया 

..... जलील मानिकपुरी..... 

Even after committing a sin, drunkards remained chaste. 

After drinking , were ashamed, regret led sin to waste. 

तमन्ना दर्द-ए-दिल की हो तो कर ख़िदमत फ़क़ीरों की 

नहीं मिलता ये गौहर बादशाहों के ख़ज़ानों में..... इक़बाल..... 

For grief of heart, serve saints off the mart. 

This pearl isn't found, with kings isn't bound. 

ख़ुश-नसीब आज भला कौन है गौहर के सिवा 

सब कुछ अल्लाह ने दे रक्खा है शौहर के सिवा..... अकबर इलाहाबादी..... 

But for Gauhar, today, who has a good fate. 

But for a husband, Lord wrote it all in plate. 

यूँ तो गौहर को मयस्सर हैं हज़ारों शौहर

उसको भाता ही नहीं कोई भी अकबर के सिवा..... गौहर...... 

'Gauhar' has a thousand husbands to serve.

But Akbar is the only one 

to deserve. 

मुझ को रोने तो दो दिखा दूँगा

बुलबुला है ये आसमान नहीं 

..... इमदाद अली बहर..... 

I will show it, let me cry. 

It's a bubble, not the sky. 

कभी हम को यक़ीं था ज़ोम था दुनिया हमारी जो मुख़ालिफ़ हो तो हो जाए मगर तुम मेहरबाँ हो 

हमें ये बात वैसे याद तो अब क्या है लेकिन हाँ इसे यकसर भुलाने में अभी कुछ दिन लगेंगे..... जावेद अख़्तर..... 

Earlier I had faith, zoom, that even if world's against me. 

As long as you are kind, let them all be. 

Now I don't all that recollect, but yes it will take many days to forget, totally disconnect. 

न जाना कि दुनिया से जाता है कोई 

बहुत देर की मेहरबाँ आते आते 

..... दाग़ देहलवी..... 

Didn't realise. Leaving the world is someone., 

You took lots of time to come, O kind one! 

मेहरबाँ हो के बुला लो मुझे चाहो जिस वक़्त 

मैं गया वक़्त नहीं हूँ कि फिर आ भी न सकूँ..... ग़ालिब..... 

Be kind and call me just  any time. 

That can't be back, I am not past time. 

शर्म आती है कि उस शहर में हम हैं कि जहाँ 

न मिले भीक तो लाखों का गुज़ारा ही न हो..... जाँ निसार अख़्तर..... 

It puts me to shame, living in city with that name. 

Lacs of people won't live, if alms they won't give. 

भीक दे कर न जाने क्या लेंगे 

इक भिकारन डरी डरी सोचे 

..... प्रेम भंडारी.....

After alms, what 'd they ask for?

A she beggar is afraid to think far ! 

आओ तो मेरे सहन में हो जाए रौशनी 

मुद्दत गुज़र गई है चराग़ाँ किए हुए 

..... अशहद बिलाल इब्न-ए-चमन..... 

Come and at my home there can be lights. 

It's long since there was a display of lights.
