हुस्न के समझने को उम्र चाहिए जानाँ 

दो घड़ी की चाहत में लड़कियाँ नहीं खुलतीं 

To understand beauty, it takes an age. 

In a little like they don't open as a page. 

 

मैं सच कहूँगी मगर फिर भी हार जाऊँगी 

वो झूट बोलेगा और ला-जवाब कर देगा

 

 I would  speak the truth but lose still. 

He'll tell lies, be unanswerable still. 

इतने घने बादल के पीछे 

कितना तन्हा होगा चाँद 

Behind such a dense cloud zone. 

The moon must be feeling alone 

कुछ तो हवा भी सर्द थी कुछ था तिरा ख़याल भी 

दिल को ख़ुशी के साथ साथ होता रहा मलाल भी 

The wind was chilly and you were in mind. 

Along with joy at heart was pain of a kind

अब तो इस राह से वो शख़्स गुज़रता भी नहीं 

अब किस उम्मीद पे दरवाज़े से झाँके कोई 

 

 Now he doesn't even traverse this way. 

With what hope, to peep through door, say. 

वो मुझ को छोड़ के जिस आदमी के पास गया 

बराबरी का भी होता तो सब्र आ जाता 

That person for whom, he had left me alone. 

Had he been equal, I could console my own. 

कुछ तो तिरे मौसम ही मुझे रास कम आए 

और कुछ मिरी मिट्टी में बग़ावत भी बहुत थी 

Partly, unsuitable was weather of your land. 

And some revolt was there in my sand. 

बस ये हुआ कि उस ने तकल्लुफ़ से बात की 

और हम ने रोते रोते दुपट्टे भिगो लिए 

It was with some etiquette, he talked, yet. 

We had  made so many scarves wet. 

 

मैं फूल चुनती रही और मुझे ख़बर न हुई 

वो शख़्स आ के मिरे शहर से चला भी गया 

I kept plucking flowers and hadn't known. 

That person came to my city

'n was gone. 

 

जिस तरह ख़्वाब मिरे हो गए रेज़ा रेज़ा 

उस तरह से न कभी टूट के बिखरे कोई 

The way, were fragmented to bits, my dreams. 

Let none be shattered this way, it seems. 

लड़कियों के दुख अजब होते हैं सुख उस से अजीब 

हँस रही हैं और काजल भीगता है साथ साथ 

Strange are girls griefs and pleasures a stranger set. 

They are laughing and in eyes kohl is getting wet. 

एक सूरज था कि तारों के घराने से उठा 

आँख हैरान है क्या शख़्स ज़माने से उठा

He was a sun from the stars home. 

Eyes are surprised, who left world dome. 

यही वो दिन थे जब इक दूसरे को पाया था 

हमारी साल-गिरह ठीक अब के माह में है 

These were the days when each other we got. 

Our anniversary falls in this month slot

अक्स-ए-ख़ुशबू हूँ बिखरने से न रोके कोई 

और बिखर जाऊँ तो मुझ को न समेटे कोई 

I am a shade of fragrance, let none stop me getting scattered. 

And let no one gather me if and when I have scattered

 

उस ने जलती हुई पेशानी पे जब हाथ रखा 

रूह तक आ गई तासीर मसीहाई की 

When he placed his hand on burning forehead to console. 

That effect of Christianity had pervaded my soul. 

 

बदन के कर्ब को वो भी समझ न पाएगा 

मैं दिल में रोऊँगी आँखों में मुस्कुराऊँगी 

Nearness of bodies he too won't understand. 

I 'll cry at heart, with smiling eyes so grand! 

ये हवा कैसे उड़ा ले गई आँचल मेरा 

यूँ सताने की तो आदत मिरे घनश्याम की थी 

How could the wind just blow away my veil? 

This way my lover 'd trouble without fail. 

तितलियाँ पकड़ने में दूर तक निकल जाना 

कितना अच्छा लगता है फूल जैसे बच्चों पर 

Catching butterflies, going too far. 

How lovely it is for children at par? 

बंद कर के मिरी आँखें वो शरारत से हँसे 

बूझे जाने का मैं हर रोज़ तमाशा देखूँ 

He conceals my eyes with a wicked smile. 

To know this spectacle, I see all the while. 

 

सिर्फ़ इस तकब्बुर में उस ने मुझ को जीता था 

ज़िक्र हो न उस का भी कल को ना-रसाओं में 

He had conquered me only with this pride. 

Let none count him with inefficient stride. 

अक्स-ए-ख़ुशबू हूँ बिखरने से न रोके कोई 

और बिखर जाऊँ तो मुझ को न समेटे कोई 

I am shadow of fragrance, let none stop me to scatter. 

And after I have scattered , 

 no one should gather
