COUPLETS ON MOON

उस के चेहरे की चमक के सामने सादा लगा 

आसमाँ पे चाँद पूरा था मगर आधा लगा 

..... इफ़्तिख़ार नसीम..... 

It appeared so dull, compared with her bright face. 

Though the moon was full, but looked half in place. 

 

कल चौदहवीं की रात थी शब भर रहा चर्चा तिरा 

कुछ ने कहा ये चाँद है कुछ ने कहा चेहरा तिरा ..... इब्न-ए-इंशा..... 

 It was fourteenth yesternight, 

we talked about you all night. 

Some said, moon was in place others in it, traced your  face. 

 

ईद का चाँद तुम ने देख लिया 

चाँद की ईद हो गई होगी 

..... इदरीस आज़ाद..... 

You saw moon on Eid. 

Moon has had it's Eid. 

 

हर एक रात को महताब देखने के लिए 

मैं जागता हूँ तिरा ख़्वाब देखने के लिए 

..... अज़हर इनायती..... 

On every night, to have moon in sight. 

Awake I keep, to dream you in sleep. 

 

वो चाँद कह के गया था कि आज निकलेगा 

तो इंतिज़ार में बैठा हुआ हूँ शाम से मैं 

..... फ़रहत एहसास..... 

I 'll appear tonight, so said that moon. 

I am waiting since eve, is it so soon? 

चाँद से तुझ को जो दे निस्बत सो बे-इंसाफ़ है 

चाँद के मुँह पर हैं छाईं तेरा मुखड़ा साफ़ है ..... शैख़ ज़हूरूद्दीन हातिम..... 

One who does compare, moon with you is unfair. 

A  shadow does moon bear, but your face is clear. 

 

पाँव साकित हो गए 'सरवत' किसी को देख कर 

इक कशिश महताब जैसी चेहरा-ए-दिलबर में थी ..... सरवत हुसैन..... 

O 'Sarvat'! Looking at someone, feet couldn't move a step. 

A moon like attraction was in beloved's face, her get up. 

 

मुझ को मालूम है महबूब-परस्ती का अज़ाब 

देर से चाँद निकलना भी ग़लत लगता है 

..... अहमद कमाल परवाज़ी ..... 

Calamity of lover worship, 

I am well aware. 

It looks bad, when in time moon isn't there. 

 

कई चाँद थे सर-ए-आसमाँ कि चमक चमक के पलट गए 

न लहू मिरे ही जिगर में था न तुम्हारी ज़ुल्फ़ सियाह थी....अहमद मुश्ताक़..... 

Several moons were in the sky, shone well and said goodbye. 

Neither blood was in my chest, nor was your dark tress at best

 

लुत्फ़-ए-शब-ए-मह ऐ दिल उस दम मुझे हासिल हो 

इक चाँद बग़ल में हो इक चाँद मुक़ाबिल हो ..... मिर्ज़ा मोहम्मद तक़ी हवस..... 

O heart! I'd then have charm of moon night. 

A moon by my side and a moon in the sight. 

चाँद में तू नज़र आया था मुझे 

मैं ने महताब नहीं देखा था 

..... अब्दुर्रहमान मोमिन..... 

Within moon, you came to view

I didn't see moon, I saw you. 

 

ये किस ज़ोहरा-जबीं की अंजुमन में आमद आमद है 

बिछाया है क़मर ने चाँदनी का फ़र्श महफ़िल में 

..... सय्यद यूसुफ़ अली खाँ नाज़िम..... 

Which Venus face is to be received with such grace? 

Moon has floored moonlight

 for the meeting in place. 

  

रुस्वा करेगी देख के दुनिया मुझे 'क़मर' 

इस चाँदनी में उन को बुलाने को जाए कौन ..... क़मर जलालवी..... 

O'Qamar'! Seeing her world 'd humiliate me

In moonlight, who' d go to call her, just see. 

 

देखा हिलाल-ए-ईद तो तुम याद आ गए 

इस महवियत में ईद हमारी गुज़र गई 

..... अज्ञात..... 

Seeing crescent of Eid, you came to my mind. 

So absorbed in your thoughts, spent Eid of a kind. 

हम ने उस चेहरे को बाँधा नहीं महताब-मिसाल 

हम ने महताब को उस रुख़ के मुमासिल बाँधा

..... इफ़्तिख़ार मुग़ल.....

I didn't liken her face with the moon. 

Almost similar to her face, was moon.
