In love there are thousands of lovely jobs.
Those doing nothing perform great jobs.
मिलाते हो उसी को ख़ाक में जो दिल से मिलता है
मिरी जाँ चाहने वाला बड़ी मुश्किल से मिलता है
You turn him to ashes, who meets you by heart.
My dear, it's hard to find one who likes by heart.
वफ़ा करेंगे निबाहेंगे बात मानेंगे
तुम्हें भी याद है कुछ ये कलाम किस का था
I will be loyal, abide by and agree..
Do you remember who said it to me?
सब लोग जिधर वो हैं उधर देख रहे हैं
हम देखने वालों की नज़र देख रहे हैं
All are looking at the way she sees.
I look at the eyes of each who sees.
हमें है शौक़ कि बे-पर्दा तुम को देखेंगे
तुम्हें है शर्म तो आँखों पे हाथ धर लेना
I wish to see your face with veil raised high
Cover your eyes with hands if you feel shy.
आशिक़ी से मिलेगा ऐ ज़ाहिद
बंदगी से ख़ुदा नहीं मिलता
O priest God can be achieved by love alone.
No amount of prayer can ever set that tone.
ग़ज़ब किया तिरे वअ'दे पे ए'तिबार किया
तमाम रात क़यामत का इंतिज़ार किया
I believed in your promise, ihat was so strange.
Night long I waited for doomsday within
range.
शब-ए-विसाल है गुल कर दो इन चराग़ों को
ख़ुशी की बज़्म में क्या काम जलने वालों का
Put out all lamps, it's meeting night.
Why have burning things in joy night.
लिपट जाते हैं वो बिजली के डर से
इलाही ये घटा दो दिन तो बरसे
Fearing electric spark she came in embrace.
Oh God! Such clouds may continue to grace
ख़ूब पर्दा है कि चिलमन से लगे बैठे हैं
साफ़ छुपते भी नहीं सामने आते भी नहीं
She sits behind a split bamboo curtain.
Neither invisible nor full view for certain.
दी शब-ए-वस्ल मोअज़्ज़िन ने अज़ाँ पिछली रात
हाए कम-बख़्त को किस वक़्त ख़ुदा याद आया
On meeting night, priest called for prayer late night.
The ill fated remembered God then, what
a plight!
उर्दू है जिस का नाम हमीं जानते हैं 'दाग़'
हिन्दोस्ताँ में धूम हमारी ज़बाँ की है
O 'Daagh'! I know well Urdu, alone.
All over India, resounds it's tone.
जिस में लाखों बरस की हूरें हों
ऐसी जन्नत को क्या करे कोई
A heaven having houries lakhs of years old!
What to do with such paradise, say, be
bold?
दिल ले के मुफ़्त कहते हैं कुछ काम का नहीं
उल्टी शिकायतें हुईं एहसान तो गया
Took my heart for free, labelled" of no use".
No compassion for gift, only regrets, abuse.
चुप-चाप सुनती रहती है पहरों शब-ए-फ़िराक़
तस्वीर-ए-यार को है मिरी गुफ़्तुगू पसंद
Silently for long, she listens to me, on parting night.
Her portrait loves to listen to my talk,
my plight.
रहा न दिल में वो बेदर्द और दर्द रहा
मुक़ीम कौन हुआ है मक़ाम किस का था
The pain stayed but not the painless, in heart.
For whom was the site and who grabbed the part.
यूँ भी हज़ारों लाखों में तुम इंतिख़ाब हो
पूरा करो सवाल तो फिर ला-जवाब हो
You are a select amidst thousands of dames.
Fulfill my desire, be matchless beyond names.
रुख़-ए-रौशन के आगे शम्अ रख कर वो ये कहते हैं
उधर जाता है देखें या इधर परवाना आता है
Placing a candle before glowing face, she says.
Let's see this way or that the fire-moth stays.
फ़लक देता है जिन को ऐश उन को ग़म भी होते हैं
जहाँ बजते हैं नक़्क़ारे वहाँ मातम भी होता है
With pleasure destiny gives it's share of grief.
With drums, there's pain too, however brief.
